Kansas University Kansas City Youth Wind Symphony
All band directors in the Kansas City Metro Area including towns within driving distance of
Kansas City on both sides of the Missouri and Kansas state lines.   Band Directors
wanting to be on the board should email Dr. Craig Miller, Board Chair.  The n
ext meeting
will be on the
final rehearsal date of April 28, 2008.  The meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m
prior to the 7:00 p.m. rehearsal:

Welcome
The Kansas University Kansas City Youth Wind Symphony will provide the highest level of
musical opportunity and experience to a select group of high school musicians in the Kansas
City Metro area and surrounding school districts in Kansas and Missouri through an annual
concert series in excellent performance venues throughout the region.   This ensemble will be
in full support of area band directors and their programs, and the ensemble will be guided by a
board of band directors from Kansas and Missouri.

In addition to the annual concert series, it is the aim of this ensemble to lead through the
commissioning of new works, performances at conventions, regional, national and
international tours, and high quality educational recordings.
Announcing the New KUKC Youth Wind
Symphony Conductor for the 2008 Season
Dr. Scott Weiss, Director of Bands
at the University of Kansas is the conductor of the
KUKC Youth Wind Symphony.  Dr. Weiss has a
bachelor's degree from the Indiana University
Jacobs School of Music and both a master's and a
doctoral degree from the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign.  Dr. Weiss is the director of
bands at the University of Kansas, where he guides
all aspects of the band program and graduate wind
conducting program.
Board of Directors
Goal One:
In collaboration with music directors in the participating schools, the KUKC YWS will
identify the students who have proven to be the highest caliber musicians in their school
ensembles. These musicians will be offered the opportunity to participate in the Youth
Wind Symphony.

Goal Two:
The ensemble will be formed by January 28, 2008 and establish at two performance
season.


Goal Three
The KUKC YWS will investigate having a corporate sponsored long term funding plan in
place
to eliminate fees for students.

Goal Four:
Plans for the fourth full season will be in place by May 208. This will include 2-3
outstanding performance venues
including the KMEA Convention.

Goal Five:
By May of 2008 the KUKC YWS will investigate the establishment of a series of tours to
provide performance opportunities for their participating student musicians
to promote
the ensemble and increase public exposure
while delivering state of the art musical
experiences to audiences in Kansas and Missouri.
Short Term Goals
Goal One:
The KUKC YWS will serve as a showcase for the talents of our students at a national
level.

Goal Two
The KUKC YWS will commission a major work.

Goal Three:
The KUKC YWS will undertake a recording project.

Goal Four
The KUKC YWS will perform at a regional and/or national convention.

Goal Five
The KUKC YWS will undertake an international tour once funding has
been secured.
